A little bit about Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedarwestern red cedarThis wonderful wood originates in North Western America and South Western Canada.  It has also been introduced to the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.  It is a soft red / brown timber and is valued for its:

  • distinct appearance,
  • aroma and its aromatic oils,
  • high natural resistance to decay,
  • light weight

Making some of the componentsIt is used in making beehives because it is strong yet lightweight, with a high resistance to decay as it does not need treating to the weathering elements.

It has many other uses such as: shingles, screens or hedges, guitars, sail boats and kayaks, moth repellents but not forgetting beehives.
